How We Built a Custom Android Reception Kiosk App for PLT Training

PLT Training approached us with a requirement for a custom Android reception kiosk application that would give visitors a more interactive way to explore their training services and engage with workplace safety content.

The application needed to run directly on a dedicated reception kiosk, be simple to use, visually engaging and easy for PLT staff to manage once installed.

The Brief

The goal was to create a purpose-built kiosk experience rather than simply displaying the existing website.

Visitors needed to be able to browse training information, view upcoming course dates, complete interactive quizzes, take part in hazard-spotting activities and view gallery content directly from the reception screen.

The app also needed a hidden administrator area so PLT staff could manage selected content without requiring development changes.

What We Built

We designed and developed a custom Android kiosk application specifically for PLT Training.

The finished application includes:

• Course category browsing with direct links to relevant PLT Training website pages
• Upcoming course listings
• Interactive Health & Safety and First Aid quizzes
• Four Spot the Hazard activities covering office, warehouse, construction and factory environments
• Photo and video gallery
• Hidden administrator login
• Staff management tools for upcoming courses and gallery content
• Firebase-backed content storage and authentication
• A portrait interface designed specifically for the reception kiosk hardware

Interactive Training Content

A major part of the project was making the kiosk genuinely interactive rather than purely informational.

The quiz section allows visitors to test their knowledge across health and safety and first aid topics, with immediate feedback after each answer.

The Spot the Hazard section provides four different workplace scenes where users can identify unsafe situations directly on screen. Each hazard provides an explanation, helping turn the activity into a simple training exercise rather than just a game.

Once all hazards in a scene have been identified, the app automatically displays a completion message.

Upcoming Courses and Website Integration

Visitors can browse upcoming training dates directly from the kiosk and open relevant course pages on the PLT Training website.

The course section also gives users quick access to PLT’s main training categories, including First Aid, Forklift Training, Health & Safety, Work Equipment, Plant Equipment and LOLER examinations.

Staff Content Management

To make the kiosk practical for day-to-day use, we also built a hidden administrator area.

Authorised staff can manage upcoming course listings and gallery content directly from the application.

The app uses Firebase for authentication, database storage and media management, allowing content to be updated without rebuilding the Android application each time.

Designed for the Physical Kiosk

The application was tested against the actual kiosk resolution and Android environment, including display scaling and density adjustments to ensure the interface remained readable and usable on the physical device.

The final build was installed and tested on-site on PLT Training’s reception kiosk.

This included checking the main navigation, course links, quizzes, hazard activities, gallery, admin tools and website integration on the live hardware.

The Result

PLT Training now has a dedicated interactive reception kiosk that allows visitors to explore courses, engage with workplace safety content and access current information in a much more engaging way.

The finished system combines custom Android development, cloud-based content management and a user-friendly touchscreen interface tailored to the client’s reception environment.
